  1. 1834-1900. German engineer who pioneered the 
  2. modern car. In 1886 he produced his first 
  3. motor vehicle and a motor-bicycle. He later 
  4. joined forces with Karl Benz and was one of 
  5. the pioneers of the high-speed four-stroke 
  6. petrol engine. Daimler, born in Wurttemberg, 
  7. had engineering experience at the Whitworth 
  8. works, Manchester, England, before joining 
  9. N A Otto of Cologne in the production of an
  10. internal-combustion gas engine 1872.
